Vol. 560 No. 5

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 dealing with three different topics. I propose to deal with these topics separately and I will call on Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office. In regard to the first topic I have received notices from Deputies Sherlock and Boyle. I call on Deputy Sherlock to state the matter.

In accordance with the terms of Standing Order 31, I seek to move the adjournment of the Dáil to discuss the following specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent attention, namely, the announcement of the loss of in excess of 200 jobs at Technicolor Home Entertainment, Youghal, which, coming on top of the loss of 160 jobs just six weeks ago, represents an economic body-blow to the east Cork region, and the need for the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to request the industrial development agencies to give the area absolute priority in the search for replacement jobs. In view of the importance of this issue I hope the Ceann Comhairle will agree to this request.

I call Deputy Boyle on the same matter.

I request the adjournment of the business of the House under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of urgent and national importance, namely, the decision of Technicolor Home Entertainment to close its Youghal, County Cork, factory with the loss of 230 jobs following the closure of another factory in the town, bringing to 450 the jobs lost in this town over a six week period.

The matter is not in order under Standing Order 31. As regards the second topic, I have received notice from Deputy Gogarty. I call on Deputy Gogarty to state the matter.

I request the adjournment of the House under Standing Order 31 to discuss another matter of urgent national importance, namely, the shocking, shameful and questionable refusal by the Department of Education and Science to release documents under the Freedom of Information Act, including the valuations of church property but also relating to other documents involving the compensation deal agreed with religious orders in relation to abuse in religious institutions, given the topicality and urgent nature of this matter.

The matter is not in order under Standing Order 31. As regards the third topic, I have received notice from Deputy Cuffe and I call on him to state the matter.

Under Standing Order 31, I request that the business of the House be adjourned to discuss a matter of urgent national importance in regard to illegal dumping in County Wicklow and that this House requests the Environmental Protection Agency to investigate urgently the significant unauthorised dumping that has taken place on CRH-Roadstone's land close to the Blessington reservoir and the need to protect the Dublin water supply from contamination from the extensive and unauthorised dump.

The matter is not in order under Standing Order 31.
