Vol. 565 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Conor Lenihan

Question:

224 Mr. C. Lenihan asked the Minister for Education and Science his plans in relation to establishing high support units for children at risk in mainstream schooling; and his views on where and how these units will operate. [10977/03]

Under the school completion programme a number of support units have been established in areas where they are deemed necessary and appropriate following consultation and approval by the national co-ordination team for the programme. The setting up of such units and the placing of a student within a support unit must only be considered when there is no other option available to the school. Strict guidelines are set down by the Department in respect of the establishment of these units.
