Vol. 568 No. 6

Written Answers. - Telecommunications Services.

Billy Timmins

Question:

254 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the reason residents of Newtownmountkennedy, County Wicklow, are not being provided the option to open a broadband account; if this service can be provided as a matter of urgency; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17073/03]

The provision of telecommunications services is a matter for the private sector companies operating in a fully liberalised market. There is a physical limitation to the distance at which ADSL can be provided from enabled exchange. The limitation is approximately 3.5 km. In the case of Newtownmountkennedy the nearest enabled exchange is approximately 11 km away.
