Vol. 654 No. 1

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 32.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 32 dealing with two different topics. I call on Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 32 to discuss an issue of national importance, namely, the need for immediate action by the Minister for Health and Children to address the crisis in child protection by appointing the additional social workers and other community care and health professionals required to fulfil the State's responsibility to children known by the HSE to be at serious risk of abuse or neglect, or actually being abused and neglected, but currently receiving no assistance because of the recruitment embargo and restrictive appointment controls.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 32 to raise a matter of national importance, namely, the urgent need for a plan to be put in place prior to any sale of the St. James's Gate site by Diageo to developers in order to ensure that the development of the site is integrated into the Liberties Regeneration Forum; that community interests are at the heart of decisions, including the community's interest in the provision of jobs, social and affordable housing and leisure facilities; the lack of Government regard for ordinary workers and communities affected by the Diageo decision to close breweries and the selling off of land evidenced by the Tánaiste's welcoming of the profit-driven developments; and also to criticise the asset-stripping approach of Diageo in announcing the closure of two breweries and the downgrading of two others with the resultant 250 job losses.

Having given the matters full consideration, I do not consider them to be in order under Standing Order 32.
