JOINT COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS debate -
Wednesday, 27 Jan 2010

Expressions of Sympathy.

Before we go into the listed business, I would like the committee to convey sympathy to the family of Pádraic MacKernan. Mr. MacKernan has just died and he was Secretary General of the Department of Foreign Affairs for a long time. At the United Nations, in Washington and in Paris he served the country well. It would be very appropriate that the committee would convey its sympathy to his wife, Caitriona, his three sons and the rest of his family.

That is unanimous.

He was the ambassador in Washington when I performed my Joyce show in the embassy. He was the brother-in-law of an old friend of mine and I was greatly shocked to hear of his death. He was a most distinguished diplomat and head of our foreign service. I agree with Deputy Higgins.

I worked with him as Minister, particularly when he was in Brussels.
