In accordance with Standing Order 87, the following message will be sent to the Dáil:
The Joint Committee on Justice, Equality, Defence and Women's Rights has completed its consideration of the following motion:
That Dáil Éireann approves, in accordance with Article 29.4.6° of Bunreacht na hÉireann, the exercise by the State of the option, provided by Article 3 of the fourth Protocol set out in the Treaty of Amsterdam, to notify the President of the Council of the European Union that it wishes to take part in the adoption and application of the following proposed measures:
(i) proposal for a Council Regulation establishing a procedure for the negotiation and conclusion of bilateral agreements between member states and third countries concerning sectoral matters and covering jurisdiction, recognition and enforcement of judgments and decisions in matrimonial matters, parental responsibility and maintenance obligations, and applicable law in matters relating to maintenance obligations; and
(ii) proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing a procedure for the negotiation and conclusion of bilateral agreements between member states and third countries concerning sectoral matters and covering applicable law in contractual and non-contractual obligations,
copies of which proposed measures were laid before Dáil Éireann on 21 January 2009.
