Veterinary Surgeons.

The next report deals with the right of establishment of, and the freedom to provide services by, veterinary surgeons.

We are reporting here on two proposed Directives dealing with the future recognition of professional qualifications of veterinary surgeons and the standards for the training of veterinary surgeons. We have also proposed the setting up of an advisory committee charged with ensuring that there are standards of training in the Member States. Their scope is outlined in paragraphs 4 to 8. Our main concern was to see that the interests of Irish veterinary surgeons are fully protected. Paragraph 10 is concerned with the possibility that Commonwealth veterinary surgeons who qualify outside the UK would have the right to practise freely in this country if registered in the British register. We are glad to learn that the right will be confined to those who graduate in the UK. In paragraph 11 we comment on a point raised by the Veterinary Council and in paragraph 12 we welcome the setting up of the suggested advisory committee.

Paragraphs 1 to 13, inclusive, agreed to.

Draft Report agreed to.

Ordered: To report accordingly.
