Seanad Éireann debate -

Vol. 19 No. 18

Public Business. - Defence Forces (Temporary Provisions) Bill, 1935—Second Stage.

Question proposed: "That the Bill be now read a Second Time."

When this annual Bill was going through the Seanad previously, I expressed the hope that before we would require an extension of the Act a permanent Army measure would be introduced. The Department of Defence had the permanent Army Bill ready about 12 months ago but, owing to unfortunate delays, it has not been possible to get it drafted. The Bill will be going to the draftsman within a week or two and we hope that the permanent Army Bill will be discussed before the present year is out.

Question put and agreed to.

In connection with the Committee Stage, as the Bill requires to be law before the end of the financial year, March 31st, I presume, if the House meets next week it will take all stages, or, if there is not likely to be any amendment perhaps these stages could be taken now.

Leas-Chathaoirleach

Would next Wednesday suit?

Ordered: That the Committee and Final Stages be taken on Wednesday next.
