Vol. 20 No. 29

Public Business. - Imposition of Duties (Confirmation of Order) Bill, 1936 (Certified Money Bill)—Committee Stage.

Bill passed through Committee without amendment and reported.

I move:—

That, notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained in Standing Order 85, the Report Stage of the Imposition of Duties (Confirmation of Order) Bill, 1936 be taken to-day.

I second the motion.

I have been asked by many Senators on this side of the House to request Senator Quirke not to press his motion to take the remaining stages of the Bill to-day. The reason is that we did not get the Official Report of the Minister's speech until this morning, and many Senators would like to read that report and reply to the statements made by the Minister. This is a very important Bill, and I do not think that the remaining stages are in any particular hurry. Therefore, I shall oppose the motion.

Is it not possible for Senator Counihan to say all he wants to say on the Second Stage of the Central Fund Bill? That Bill will give the Senator great latitude. He can roam around the whole extent of national affairs, and I think he should be satisfied with that.

What is the cause of the hurry?

I do not know.

We, on this side, insist on the motion.

Without reasons?

The motion to take the remaining stages of this Bill was put down to facilitate business. I have no objection to the remaining stages being left over until next week, and I suggest to Senator Quirke that, if any Senator has objection to the proposal, he might withdraw his motion.

I ask leave to withdraw the motion I have moved.

Motion, by leave, withdrawn.
Report Stage fixed for Wednesday, 18th March.
