Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 16 Mar 1988

Vol. 119 No. 1

Request Under Standing Order 29.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

I have notice from Senator O'Toole regarding a motion which he wishes to move under Standing Order 29. I now call Senator O'Toole.

I wish to move the Adjournment of the Seanad on a specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration. I believe it to be a matter of extreme urgency and a matter of great public interest. I refer to the proposed hanging of six members of the community in South Africa on Friday of this week. As you will be aware, it is a matter of extreme urgency——

An Leas-Chathoairleach

The Senator is not required to elaborate at this point.

You are aware of the issue and I wish for a ruling on it.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

I have decided that the motion is one covered by the Standing Order and I ask Senators who support the request to rise in their places.

Five or more Senators stood.

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

The debate on the motion will take place at 4 p.m., or earlier if the business ordered is concluded. In view of my acceptance of the motion raised by Senator Joe O'Toole today, the half hour Adjournment Matter cannot be taken. May I ask the Leader of the House to indicate what the Order of Business is today?
