SELECT COMMITTEE ON HEALTH AND CHILDREN debate -
Thursday, 18 Feb 2010

Business of Select Committee.

We propose to hold a meeting of the Joint Committee on Health and Children next week when three groups will appear before it. A motion will also be on the agenda.

I have discussed the matter with members of the committee. Three groups will appear before the joint committee and I would also like time to consider the motion. There is a suggestion that we can arrange to meet on Wednesday at 1 p.m. I have consulted the Fianna Fáil members and Deputy Reilly. Everyone I have spoken to is able to attend at that time. I would prefer to deal with the motion rather than invite representatives of the HSE to attend. That would pre-empt the outcome of the discussion on the motion. I suggest, therefore, that we deal with the motion only.

Is it agreed that we will hear the deputations on Tuesday and hold a special meeting on Wednesday to discuss the motion? Agreed.

It can be relatively short.

Tonight on "Prime Time" there will be an item on symphysiotomy, an issue with which we have been dealing for some time. As members of the committee, we should be aware of this because we will be reacting to the issue after the programme has been broadcast. It is important that we think about what we will do about the issue.

Has a date been set for the recommencement of consideration of the Bill?

The clerk will consult. The suggested dates are 2, 3 and 4 March but this will be confirmed.

The select committee adjourned at 3.35 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Tuesday, 2 March 2010.
