A person who is resident in Ireland must have an Irish, EU or EEA driving licence to drive here. An applicant for an Irish licence, by exchange or otherwise, must be resident in Ireland. If they are not resident, they may not obtain an Irish licence. If a resident exchanges their licence for an Irish licence, the original licence is returned to the issuing authority. However, drivers who are not resident in Ireland may drive here on a valid EU or other licence while visiting.

Acceptance of an insurance proposal is a commercial decision for the insurer involved and the Department has no role in this activity. Insurance Ireland, the representative body for insurers, has a free insurance information service, which may be contacted at feedback@insuranceireland.eu.
