Deputy Peadar Tóibín asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that there has been a 12% increase in financial aid applications to the Irish Cancer Society in the first quarter of 2014 and that contrary to the Health Service Executive guidelines which state that if a person, applying for a medical card, has an income in excess of the relevant guidelines, the HSE must consider if refusing eligibility would result in undue hardship to that person and his or her dependants, hardship is being experienced by cancer patients whose discretionary medical cards have been withdrawn or applications have been refused due to cuts to the medical and general practitioner card budget for 2014 as overseen by his Department.
