Durkan asked the Minister for Health the extent to which he continues to monitor the retention and development of nursing homes in the public sector; if his attention has been drawn to the suggestions that upgrading and refurbishments are sometimes excessively costly leading to a danger of closure; if he will ensure that the maximisation of available accommodation is achieved and continues to be a central mission objective; if he will further ensure that all works undertaken are necessary and in the long-term interest of the institution and the care and welfare of its patients; if he will ensure that piecemeal stripping out of elements of service in a self-serving way is not allowed to continue in any public nursing homes; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
