Vol. 2 No. 38

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ ORAL ANSWERS. ] - THE RENT RESTRICTIONS ACT.

To ask the Minister for Local Government whether the Commission appointed to inquire into the working of the Rent Restrictions Act has yet reported the result of its labours, if so, whether it has recommended the continuance of the restrictions against rent raising, if not, whether in view of the fact that the Act will expire shortly will he say what steps the Government propose to take to prevent hardships being inflicted on tenants who look to this Act for protection.

The Minister for Local Government has asked me to reply to this question. The Committee appointed to inquire into and report on the operation of the Increase of Rent and Mortgage Interest (Restrictions) Act, 1920, has not yet completed its investigations. I am informed that an ad interim report will be submitted at an early date, to be followed by a final report about four weeks later. Until the final report has been received and considered no pronouncement can be made as to the steps the Government may decide to take in this matter.
