Vol. 3 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - SECONDARY TEACHERS' CLAIMS.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that the following public bodies have recently passed resolutions in support of the claim of lay secondary teachers to better remuneration and salary scales, to pensions, and to adequate security of employment, viz.: Dublin Corporation, Limerick Corporation, Limerick County Council, and the Urban Councils of Galway, Mullingar, Killarney, Naas, and Tuam, and if he will say what action he proposes to take to give effect to the recommendations of such a bulk of representative public opinion?

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. It is not, however, clear that the bodies named have considered whether the improvements they advocate should involve converting the occupation of secondary teachers into a State service, and whether they have also considered the provision for expenditure which such a service would involve. It is at present proposed to make the most equitable possible distribution of the available funds for the remuneration of secondary teachers.
