Vol. 3 No. 22

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ ORAL ANSWERS. ] - LIMERICK BOARD OF CONSERVATORS.

SEAMUS O CRUADHLAOICH

asked the Minister for Fisheries whether the area of the Limerick Board of Conservators is not entirely too unwieldy for efficient control by the Board, extending as it does from the most westerly point in Co. Kerry to near Manorhamilton, in Co. Leitrim; whether the Minister can arrange that this area be divided up into four or five less cumbersome areas, with a view to the exercising of better supervision over the important inland fishery of the Shannon and its tributaries.

The division of Ireland into fishery districts is necessarily based on the watersheds. The River Shannon and its tributaries cover by far the largest fishery district area in the country. The district is administered by the Board of Conservators having headquarters at Limerick. The Limerick Board is elected from six electoral divisions, and the Conservators elected for any one division may act for that division. The delegation of the work of the Board to the electoral division has been under the consideration of the Government for some time, and it is hoped that a satisfactory arrangement will soon be arrived at under which the difficulties associated with the administration of this extensive district will be lessened.
