Vol. 6 No. 1

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DAMAGED BRIDGES IN CORK.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether it is his intention to give financial assistance to the Cork Co. Council for the repair of the many broken bridges in Co. Cork, and, if so, whether in view of the announced policy of the Government to grapple with the problem of unemployment he will recommend to the Cork Co. Council that all broken bridges be repaired by direct labour, under the supervision of the County Surveyors, and thereby prevent the work of repairing bridges being carried out by persons not urgently in need of employment under the contract system.

The matter is being considered in conjunction with the Minister for Finance.

In the case of the smaller bridges it is probable that the Council will have the work carried out by direct labour. It may be necessary to adopt the contract system for the larger bridges. The Deputy may, however, be assured that the necessity for the relief of unemployment will not be overlooked when proposals of the rebuilding of bridges are under consideration.
