Vol. 6 No. 1

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - RESIGNED OR DISMISSED R.I.C.

asked the Minister for Finance if he can furnish the date of receipt of the final report and recommendations of the Committee which was appointed to consider the claims of ex-members of the R.I.C. who resigned or were dismissed because of their National sympathies during the period of the Anglo-Irish war, the total number of such claims submitted to and dealt with by the Committee, the number of cases sanctioned by the Committee as having resigned or having been dismissed for the reasons stated, whether individuals whose cases have been rejected will be advised direct giving the reason why their claims have not been sanctioned, whether any claims have heen received by the Ministry since the final report was submitted and if he can state when, and by what means, it is proposed to deal with such cases.

The Report was received on the 10th October last. In 631 out of 1,136 cases considered, the Committee came to the conclusion that the resignations or dismissals from the Royal Irish Constabulary were caused by the National sympathies of the men concerned. It is not proposed to take further action in regard to those cases which were not passed by the Committee or which were not received in time for its consideration, and the cases which have been passed will be carefully considered with a view to the issue of certificates in accordace with the provisions of Section 5 of the Superannuation and Pensions Act, 1923.

Can the Minister explain why it is that the regulations governing the conditions under which compensation is paid have not been tabled in accordance with the promise made by him previous to the adjournment?

They will be tabled this evening.

I did not quite catch that answer. Would the Minister repeat it?

You will read it in the Press in the morning.

Arising out of the original answer, I wish to ask if the Minister's reply is that these compensations if allowed are only to date back to the passing of the Act last August, or are they to date back to the disestablishment of the Force last year?

I do not think that that arises out of the question. In any case, under the Act they can only date back to August.
