Vol. 6 No. 13

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - PAYMENT OF CARETAKER OF ARRAN COASTGUARD STATION.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that a man named Gill was appointed as caretaker of the Arran Coastguard Station early in 1922, that his remuneration was fixed at £1 4s. 6d. per week, that he held the position for some twelve months until the arrival of the Gárda Síochána, that he has never received payment of any kind for his work, and whether the Minister will have inquiries made and see that payment is immediately ordered?

Gill was not an attested soldier, but there is evidence that he took over the care of the Coastguard Station at Arran as a Volunteer. The claim for pay will be considered and will be disposed of at the earliest possible date, but payment will not be made at the rate for an attested soldier. Gill has received payment from another public Department for caretaking the Life Saving Apparatus at North Arran for the period from May, 1922, onwards.
