Vol. 6 No. 35

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - DUBLIN CYCLE AGENT'S CLAIM.

SEAN MAC GIOLLA 'N RIOGH

asked the Minister for Defence if he can state what is the reason for the delay in settling the claim of Mr. M. Fleming, of 13 Dolphin Avenue, South Circular Road, Dublin, for cycles and fittings commandeered by the Volunteers at Killeshandra, Co. Cavan, in May, 1920, the amount of claim being £18; if he is aware that particulars of claim have been already furnished to Portobello Barracks, and if he will undertake to have same dealt with promptly.

The claim in question relates to a period prior to the Truce. The position at that time was that responsibility for discharging any liabilities incurred rested on local Volunteer Authorities. Claims of the period cannot be paid out of funds voted by the Dáil for the maintenance of the Army. The general question as to what extent and from what funds any of those claims may be settled, has yet to get consideration. Pending a decision, Mr. Fleming's claim cannot be given further consideration.
