Vol. 7 No. 1

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - TERMS OF CANADIAN STORE CATTLE AGREEMENT.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether he can state the terms of the agreement arrived at between the British and Canadian Governments with regard to the entry of Canadian store cattle into Great Britain.

I am not aware of any agreement between the British and Canadian Governments with regard to entry of Canadian store cattle into Great Britain other than that which was given effect to in the "Importation of Animals Act, 1922." This Act has been in operation since 1st April, 1923, and orders made thereunder by the British Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries continue to regulate the entry of Canadian stores.

Arising out of that question I would like to ask the Minister if he would ascertain what transpired at the Conference previous to the passing of that Act, because there was a Conference held in London at which the representatives of the Canadian Government met representatives of the British Government and arrangements were arrived at. I have seen the decision myself already, but as it is of vital importance to the future of the livestock industry, and in view of the fact that we are asking for compensation for slaughtered animals at the ports of landing through foot-and-mouth disease, I think it would be a good help if the information I have asked in this question were published.

Does the Minister propose to make a speech on this matter?

I will try to find out the information the Deputy asks for.
