Vol. 7 No. 5

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DEPENDENTS' ALLOWANCE (HOLYCROSS).

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state why dependents' allowance was disallowed to Mrs. Whelan, Kilballyowen, Holycross, Co. Limerick, in respect of her son, Michael Whelan, 18th Battalion, C. Coy., East Limerick Brigade, who attested March 10th, 1922, and was discharged November 1st, 1923; whether he is aware that his earnings previous to attestation were 35s. per week, all of which his mother received; that owing to his being in a Flying Column he was unable to give any of his earnings for a considerable time to his mother; and whether he will give due consideration to this with a view to payment of allowance.

Mrs. Whelan's claim, which was not made until shortly before her son's discharge from the Army, was disallowed, after due investigation, on the ground that the extent of her dependence on him for a reasonable period prior to his enlistment was less than the minimum required by regulations, namely, 12s. a week, before an allowance might be issued.
