Vol. 7 No. 6

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DUBLIN COMPENSATION CLAIM.

asked the Minister for Finance whether a claim for compensation for personal injuries sustained in an ambush in Aungier Street, Dublin, in August, 1922, has been received from Mrs. MacHugh, 11 Windsor Terrace, Portobello; whether the claim was heard in July, 1923, but no decision was communicated to Mrs. MacHugh until April, 1924, when she was informed that no compensation was payable, and whether in view of the length of time that elapsed between the hearing and the decision, he will reconsider the case with a view to meeting the out of pocket expenses to which Mrs. MacHugh was put.

I am satisfied that all the facts of this case were fully and carefully considered by the Compensation (Personal Injuries) Committee, who were of opinion that the out of pocket expenses incurred by the applicant as a result of the injury, did not involve any hardship. I see no reason, therefore, why the case should be reopened.

Does the Minister realise that the delay in communicating the result of these cases, a delay in this case of more than six months, causes hardship and inconvenience, and arouses hopes that are not fulfilled, and will he try and expedite the communication of the decisions in cases of this kind?

I do not think it causes any hardship. It is simply one of the many attempts to get money where there is really no case, and where no injury has been suffered.
