Vol. 7 No. 9

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CLARE SOLDIER'S PENSION.

PADRAIG O hOGAIN

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware of the delay in awarding a pension to Alfred McGannon, of Quilty, Co. Clare, who was discharged from the Army on January 15th, 1923, suffering from shell-shock, the effects of an injury received in action; if he is aware that he served in E Company, No. 10637, 4th Battalion, 5th Brigade, 1st Western Division, and was wounded at the taking of Clifden Barracks.

Mr. McGannon was discharged from the Army owing to unfitness due to neurasthenia. There is no evidence that his condition was in any way due to military service. Furthermore, compensation under the provisions of the Army Pensions Act, 1923, can be awarded only in respect of wounds or injuries, and it does not appear that Mr. McGannon was wounded. In the circumstances it is not practicable to grant a pension or gratuity to him.
