Vol. 7 No. 30

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - WESTMEATH CLAIM FOR ARREARS OF PAY.

SEAN O LAIDHIN

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that a sum of £99, back pay, is due to Captain Gilbert J. Nugent, Jamestown, Castletown, Co. Westmeath, who attested in May, 1922, and who was discharged on March 7th, 1924, Pay-book No. 24304; and whether, as Captain Nugent held his rank while at the Curragh, payment of amount due will be expedited.

Mr. Nugent's rank as Captain was not authorised, and was therefore irregular. It cannot be recognised for pay purposes.

The Minister is, of course, aware that this man has acted as an officer, and that G.H.Q. knew he was so acting. He is further aware, I am sure, that this man has conducted parties of men on the occasion of raids. Were those raids irregular or were they legal?

The information I have given to the Deputy is what has been put before me. I will undertake to look into the matter personally.
