Vol. 8 No. 22

CEISTEANNA.—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - COMPENSATION FOR COMMANDEERED MOTOR CAR.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that Mr. Edward J. Kelly, Ballytore, Co. Kildare, has not yet received compensation in respect of a fully-equipped Ford 5-seater touring car, No. IO. 1052, valued at £200, commandeered by Colonel Seán Cusack, Curragh Camp, on the 4th July, 1922; whether several applications have been made without result, and whether he will have enquiries made with a view to expediting payment.

Mr. Kelly's car was taken by troops as a result of a search of Ballytore after an engagement with Irregulars. A considerable quantity of explosives, some packed in the car, were found in his garage. In the circumstances his claim for compensation is one for very careful investigation. Enquiries in the case are still proceeding.

I would like to inform the Minister that this man is not responsible for any explosives that were found in the car.

That is one of the matters that will be the subject of investigation.
