Vol. 9 No. 3

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - SAWMILL PACKING INDUSTRY.

SEAN O LAIDHIN

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the unemployment existing among men engaged in the sawmill packing industry, as a result of the huge amount of boxwood imported into the Saorstát; and if it is intended to introduce legislation imposing a tariff on the importation of the ready material, which is used for eggs, butter boxes, and packing cases, and thus relieve much unemployment.

I am aware that unemployment exists amongst men engaged in the sawmill packing industry, but as regards the point raised in the latter part of the Deputy's question, I feel that I cannot at this stage say anything in anticipation of the Budget statement for the coming financial year.

Can the Minister give any promise of Protection to relieve unemployment so that preference would be given to users of those boxes?

I have nothing to add.
