Vol. 9 No. 10

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - OCCUPATION OF KERRY PREMISES.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that the premises of Mr. E.J. O'Hanrahan, Sneem, Co. Kerry, were occupied for five months by National Forces while the owner was in prison; that his wife and family had to leave the house and find lodgings elsewhere; that Mr. O'Hanrahan's house was badly damaged and a considerable amount of his property destroyed, and whether, seeing that he has not yet received any compensation, settlement of his claim will now be made.

This matter is being investigated by the Department of Defence and by the Board of Works. The Department of Defence state that the premises were occupied by the troops for one month only, and not for five months, as stated in the question. The claim made was for £794, but the inquiries of the Board of Works, so far as they have proceeded, seem to show that a sum of from £50 to £100 should cover the loss and damage caused. The investigation will be expedited. The Department of Defence are, however, informed that the claimant took an active part in the campaign of destruction. The inquiries of the Department of Defence are being pursued with the view of ascertaining whether the activities of the claimant have been such as would debar him from receiving compensation from the Government.
