Vol. 10 No. 2

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - KILGOWAN POST OFFICE.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that the closing of the Post Office at Kilgowan, Co. Kildare, has caused great inconvenience to the people of the surrounding districts, inasmuch as the Post Offices at Kilcullen and Dunlavin are distant some four or five miles, a fact which entails considerable hardship, particularly on old age pensioners; and whether, in view of the facts stated, he will consider the re-opening of this office.

The Kilgowan Sub-Post Office, Co. Kildare, was closed in June last as it was found that the amount of business transacted there was negligible and did not warrant the maintenance of the office. No complaint of any resulting inconvenience has since been received. There is no village at Kilgowan. A Postman serves the district on six days a week, and as he can sell stamps and postal orders to applicants and accept letters for registration and parcels for the post, the closing of the office should not entail any serious inconvenience to local residents. Old Age Pensioners who are incapacitated are permitted to draw their pensions through agents. I regret that in the circumstances I would not be justified in re-opening this office.
