Vol. 10 No. 5

CEISTEANNA.—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - ARMS FOR FISHERY INSPECTORS.

TOMÁS MacEOIN

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state whether Inspectors of Fisheries on the Shannon have licences to carry revolvers, and, if so, whether this involves authorisation to fire upon men suspected of poaching salmon from the river.

Some Inspectors of Fisheries on the Shannon have licences to carry revolvers. It is not for me to decide in a particular case whether an inspector was justified in using his revolver or not. If the persons who through modesty or otherwise, wish to conceal their identity under the title of "men suspected of poaching salmon," feel that they are aggrieved in the matter, they can seek, and, if they are entitled to it, obtain full redress in the courts.

Will the Minister provide the funds necessary to take action in the courts?

I could not afford it.
