Vol. 11 No. 20

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - MOTOR VEHICLES IN P. O. SERVICE.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he can state the number of motor cycles, motor cars, light motor vans, and motor lorries respectively, employed by the Post Office, and whether it is possible to make any statement as to the annual cost of running each type of vehicle.

The number of motor vehicles employed by the Department of Posts and Telegraphs is as follows:—Motor cycles and cycle combinations, 71; cars, nil; light vans, 15; ton vans, 8; heavy lorries, 3.

These services have not been sufficiently long in operation to enable an accurate statement of the annual cost of running of each type to be made, but I may say that Post Office motor services have not been sanctioned unless where they were cheaper than the horse or motor services carried out by private contract.
