Vol. 12 No. 20

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - COMMANDEERED CARS—BANTRY CLAIM.

asked the Minister for Finance whether the Compensation Commission and the Committee set up under the Indemnity Act, 1924, have received claims from Mr. Alph. McCarthy, The Garage, Bantry, Co. Cork, for cars commandeered and hired in pre-Truce and post-Truce days by Irish Volunteers, and whether, in view of the bad financial condition of claimant's affairs, consideration and settlement of his claims will be expedited.

Inquiry has been made at the Offices of the Compensation (Ireland) Commission, but receipt of a claim there on behalf of the person named by the Deputy cannot, from the particulars given, be traced.

There is a claim relating to the commandeering and hirage of motors which was recently received in my Department. This, however, cannot, under existing regulations, be referred to the Committee appointed under the Act until it has been definitely ascertained whether the claim is in respect of the same subject matter as the claim under the Damage to Property (Compensation) Act on behalf of the same applicant, which was recently dismissed in Court. There will be no avoidable delay in disposing of the matter.
