Vol. 13 No. 4

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - PRISONERS' DAILY FOOD RATIONS.

TOMAS MAC EOIN

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state what is the daily food ration provided for male prisoners undergoing hard labour, and what is the estimated cost of same per man.

The daily food ration provided for male prisoners undergoing hard labour is as follows:—Breakfast: stirabout, 1½ pints; milk, ¾ pint. Dinner: bread, ¼ lb.; potatoes, ¾ lb.; meat broth, 1 pint, with beef (without bone), ¼ lb. (alternated with 10 ozs. suet pudding or ¾ pint soup). Supper: bread, ½ lb.; margarine, ½ oz.; cocoa, tea or coffee, 1 pint.

The estimated cost per prisoner per day of this dietary is 8d. This figure does not include cost of cooking, which is performed by prison labour.

I hope no Deputy is contemplating qualifying for this daily ration.

Many people in the country would be glad to get that.
