Vol. 13 No. 12

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - ALLEGED TRADING IN GOVERNMENT OFFICES.

asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to a statement in the Official Journal of the Dublin United Tobacconists' Association to the effect that unlicensed persons sell tobaccos and cigarettes in Government Departments; if he will take steps to see that Government Offices are not used for trading purposes against traders who have to pay Dublin rates and taxes.

My attention has been called to the statement referred to in the question. I am aware, as a result of investigation following complaints addressed to me by the Dublin United Tobacconists' Association, that co-operative clubs consisting of persons employed in some Government Departments purchase tobaccos and cigarettes on behalf of members. The clubs do not use the Government Offices for trading purposes. I am advised that no licence is necessary in such cases, and in the circumstances see no reason to interfere in the matter.

Mr. BYRNE

Does the Minister approve of the action of his employees?

I do not feel called upon either to approve or disapprove.
