Vol. 14 No. 13

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - RECLAMATION WORK IN MAYO.

asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture if he is aware that owing to the formation of the lands and to the lack of money for reclamation work in Mayo the people are unable to avail generally of the Drainage Maintenance Act, 1925, and that in that county there are large areas of land requiring only scientific working and the making of minor drains to carry off surface moisture, and if, in view of this, he will have such districts as are susceptible of easy reclamation surveyed with a view to recommending the Executive Council to grant moneys to make those areas suitable for distribution amongst agriculturists.

Works of reclamation on a large scale are not properly works for the Land Commission to undertake, whose primary function is the transfer of lands from owners to tenants.

If such works of reclamation are to be undertaken by a Government Department, it would appear to be a matter for the Board of Works, which has special statutory powers, and an engineering staff.
