Vol. 14 No. 14

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - REDEMPTION OF TURNPIKE ANNUITIES.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he will, during the present session, introduce legislation which would empower county councils to redeem the annuities payable under the Turnpike Abolition Commissioners' Award of 1856 and thereby relieve the rates of a perpetual charge.

County councils have power under Article 22 of the Schedule to the Local Government (Application of Enactments) Order, 1898, to borrow for the purposes of discharging the liabilities referred to. In the event of agreement as to the terms of redemption not being reached with the interested parties, the matter will be considered as soon as practicable after receipt of the requisite information from the county councils concerned.
