Vol. 15 No. 4

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CATTLE SEIZURE (ROSCOMMON).

asked the Minister for Justice whether cattle to the value of about £400, the property of Mr. Patrick Keigher, of Glanbally-thomas. Tulsk, County Roscommon, were seized by military on the 13th March, 1923, on account of alleged trespass on the lands of Colonel Chichester Constable; whether these cattle were sold; if he will state what were the proceeds of the sale, and to what purpose were these proceeds applied.

A seizure of trespassing stock, including 19 head of cattle, the property of Mr. Patrick Keigher, was made on the lands of Colonel Chichester Constable. The proceeds of the sale of Mr. Keigher's stock amounted to £148. The seizure in question was one of a series of seizures undertaken by the military with a view to restoring order and preventing wholesale trespass of lands. From the proceeds of these seizures, taken as a whole, full compensation was paid to those individuals whose stock was seized in error. The expenses were then met, and the balance that remained over was distributed to the owners in proportion to the selling price of the stock. Accordingly, a paying order for £81 8s. 0d. was forwarded to Mr. Keigher, being 11-20ths of the gross selling price of his stock.
