Vol. 16 No. 3

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - EVICTED TENANTS' REPRESENTATIVE'S CLAIM.

asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture if he can state whether the claim of Mr. John Clarke, Kishavanna, Edenderry, the representative of Thomas, John and Richard Clarke, evicted tenants on the Bury Estate (No. 1868), Co. Kildare, which is now being divided, will be considered favourably in the said distribution.

The Land Commission have inquired into and considered the application of John Clarke for reinstatement in a holding in the townland of Downings on the Bury Estate formerly occupied by his uncle, Thomas J. Clarke, deceased, and have decided to take no action in the matter.

Is the Minister aware that this estate was held by this man's father and two brothers, that they were evicted in 1881, the time that the celebrated Land Act was introduced, that the lease fell in, I think, just before the Land Act was passed, and that the landlord put on £10 an acre on this holding of 80 acres, which, as they were not able to pay, they were evicted? They were most deserving people, and this man is the representative of these people, the others having given up their claims to him. He is working for his brother and he is understood to be a very excellent farmer.

Mr. HOGAN

The information in the Land Commission is that the Clarkes surrendered the lease.
