Vol. 16 No. 15

WRITTEN ANSWER. - BALLYLEAGUE (LONGFORD) COMPENSATION CLAIM.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that during the months of October and November, 1920, the shop of Mr. Luke Farrell, Ballyleague, Lanesborough, County Longford, was raided by British military, who, it is stated, committed a considerable amount of damage, such as the breaking of doors, shop fronts and fittings, and destroyed and commandeered a large amount of goods found in the shop; that the Shaw Commission only allowed £85 for damage to the house, and that no award was made in respect of the goods destroyed and commandeered; and if he can state when there is a likelihood of the claim for goods being heard, seeing that this man is now compelled to go out of business owing to the losses which have been sustained by these raids, and the fact that his ledgers were also taken away, thus depriving him of the means of collecting debts to the value of £500.

The Compensation (Ireland) Commission made an award of the amount stated in favour of the person named by the Deputy and payment thereof was made by my Department in July, 1923. I am not aware that the determination was made in respect of the damage done to the premises alone, but as the Commission have now ceased to function the award must be accepted as final. It is to be presumed that all the relevant facts were placed before the Commission by the applicant.
