The total number of applicants for unemployment benefit received at all the Employment Exchanges and Branch Employment Offices of the Department for the-periods specified in the question are as follows:— (1) From the 8th January, 1924, to the 12th January; 1925—209,357; (2) From the 13th January, 1925, to the 4th January, 1926—139,808; (3) From the 5th January, 1926, to the 13th October, 1926—57,319.
In addition, about 9,500 applicants for special benefit under Section 3 of the Unemployment Insurance (No. 2) Act, 1924, were received prior to the 31st March, 1925. The amounts paid in unemployment benefit are as follows:—1924, £973,264; 1925, £886,768; 1926 (up to the end of October, 1926), £486,417.
In addition to these amounts, a sum of £55,211 was paid by way of special benefit under Section 3 of the Unemployment Insurance (No. 2) Act, 1924.
The number of persons in receipt of unemployment benefit during the month of October, 1926, were as follows:—

As the statistical periods fixed by the Department do not always coincide with the calendar months of the year I am unable to give the number of applicants for unemployment benefit for the exact periods required by the Deputy, but I trust that the information that is available will suit the Deputy's purpose equally well.
