Vol. 17 No. 10

QUESTION ON THE ADJOURNMENT. - RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT.

May I ask the Minister for Finance if he will take into account the £1,200,000 which has been saved from the unspent Vote, and see whether it could not be spent during the next three months in putting men at work? The Minister gave us certain figures this morning, from which it appears he is going to surrender one and a quarter millions. As work is badly needed, that money ought to be spent.

I quite agree with Deputy Johnson. As far as we can, we will speed up the spending of this money. We will do that. I can mention one instance where circumstances, over which we had no control, held us back. Take the Post Office. Owing to scarcity of coal it was not possible to get steel. Now I believe steel can be got, but a special price has to be paid for it. We would agree to that special price, so that the work should not be delayed. So far as we can speed up the spending of the money we will do so.

The Dáil adjourned at 11.20 p.m. until January 25th, 1927.
