CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - SAORSTAT EMPLOYMENT EXCHANGES.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will furnish the following, viz.:—(1) the number of the Unemployment or Labour Exchanges in the Saorstát; (2) the expense of staffing and maintaining these Exchanges during the year 1926; (3) the number of males and females for whom employment was found by these Exchanges during the year 1926, and (4) the number of juveniles of both sexes for whom employment was found by these Exchanges during the year 1926.

(1) The number of Employment Exchanges, including Branch Employment Offices, in the Saorstát at present is 99.

(2) The Employment Exchange Service has two main functions (a) the administration of the Unemployment Insurance Acts, (b) the fitting of workers into employment. The gross cost in 1926 of the whole service, including postal services, premises, etc., was £133,250, and the net cost after allowing for appropriations in aid, £27,850.

(3) The number of males and females for whom employment was found by the offices in question during the year 1926 is 13,401 males and 4,201 females.

(4) The number of juveniles for whom employment was found during the year 1926 is 927 (406 boys and 521 girls).
