Vol. 18 No. 5

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - SILVER RIVER DRAINAGE BOARD.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has received a complaint from Mr. P. O'Connor, Secretary, Silver River Drainage Board, Durrow, Offaly, regarding the refusal of the members of the Board to carry out their duties; whether he is prepared to order a sworn inquiry as requested, or if he will state what steps he intends to take for the election of a board which will carry out its duties.

A complaint was received from Mr. O'Connor in February, 1924, but no action was taken on it nor has the Government any power to act as suggested. This drainage district is managed by a joint committee of the County Councils of Offaly and Westmeath, and if the joint committee is not doing its business properly it is the duty of the County Councils to see that matters are put right.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary undertake to communicate with the Commissioner in Offaly who is acting on behalf of the County Council and who, up to the present, has refused to take any action?

I have no right to do that, but I will consider whether it might not be a useful thing to do.
