Vol. 19 No. 5

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - ORMSBY ESTATE (MAYO).

asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture whether he is aware that the lands in the townlands of Carrownagleragh and Carrareagh, on the Ormsby estate, Kiltimagh, County Mayo, were acquired by the Congested Districts Board in 1910; that the lands are not yet vested, and that the tenants are unable to get loans for building houses, etc., because of the failure of the Irish Land Commission to have the holdings vested; if he will state what steps, if any, have been taken to vest those lands, and if all moneys paid in excess of annuities since 1910 will be refunded to the tenants on that estate.

Mr. HOGAN

The lands of Carrownagleragh and Carrareagh referred to situate on the estate of Anthony Ormsby were acquired by the late Board and vested in them on 1st January, 1917. The Board also acquired in December, 1918, the tenancy interest in a small holding on these townlands and a large holding in the townland of Coolaght situate on the same estate, and afterwards had the lands striped and allotted. The allottees, who had surrendered lands and were given new holdings, were not allowed by the adjoining landholders to occupy the portions of the new holdings in the townland of Coolaght. This matter was settled quite recently, when lands on the Ormsby Demesne, acquired under the Land Act, 1923, were being divided, and the Land Commission is now in a position to proceed with the sale.
