Vol. 19 No. 5

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DUBLIN ELECTRICITY DEPARTMENT DISMISSALS.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the Dublin Corporation has dismissed 150 employees from its Electricity Department, stating that the reason for dismissal is the refusal of the Minister to sanction the continuance of the normal development of the undertaking in cable-laying and other services; whether the Minister proposes to take any action in the matter, and whether provision for the payment of compensation to employees so dismissed is made in the Electricity (Supply) Bill, 1927.

The sanction of my Department is required to new expenditure involved in an extension of works by the Electricity Department of the Corporation and in so far as the discharges referred to in the question are discharges from works for which such sanction has not been obtained they do not seem to be a matter for compensation. I have received particulars of new works which it is desired to carry out and a decision regarding them will be arrived at without undue delay. It will be appreciated that it is necessary for me to ensure that costly works are not carried out at this stage which would be useless or unsuitable when a supply of electricity from the Shannon becomes available two years from now.
