Vol. 19 No. 24

PRIVATE BUSINESS. - RAILWAYS (ROAD MOTOR SERVICES) BILL, 1927—FROM THE SEANAD.

Ordered: That the Dáil go into Committee to take the amendments from the Seanad.

I move that the Committee agree with the Seanad in the following three amendments to this Bill:—

1. In Section 3, sub-section (2), after the word "service" in line 50, the following words inserted, "either permanently or tentatively for a period not exceeding twelve months."

2. In Section 3, sub-section (6), before the word "road," in line 28, the word "permanent" inserted.

3. In Section 5, sub-section (1), after the word "service" in line 21, the following words inserted, "other than a road motor service being run tentatively."

These three amendments really deal with the same point. The net effect of them is that where the Railway Company propose a route which they describe and have approved as a service run tentatively for a period not exceeding twelve months, that then they may discontinue such tentative service without the specific sanction of the Minister with regard to withdrawal or discontinuance. When this was raised in the Seanad I indicated certain fears and doubts I had in the matter, I said the tendency might be to make the Railway Company introduce all services as tentative services for a period not exceeding twelve months. The answer to that is that where such services are seen not to be in their essence experimental services, then permission can be refused to such service, and I think in that way the position is safeguarded. Although I did not receive the amendments with any great enthusiasm in the Seanad, I am now disposed to recommend them for the acceptance of the Committee.

Amendments agreed to.
The Dáil went out of Committee.
Reported: That the Committee agreed with all the amendments from the Seanad.
Question—"That the Dáil agree with the Committee in its report"— put and agreed to.
