asked the Minister for Finance if he can state (1) the individual works of restoration carried out under the Drainage Maintenance Act, 1924, by the Commissioners of Public Works during the year 1927-28; the district and county in which these works were carried out; the total expenditure involved in each, and the amount of the Government free grant and county free grant, respectively, in each; (2) the works of restoration which were begun but were not completed under the same Act; the district concerned; the estimated, cost of each; the amount actually expended on each in the financial year 1927-28; and the respective amounts of the Government and county free grant in each case; (3) the number of proposals (with a synopsis of each) to form a drainage district under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1925, submitted by county councils to the Board of Works; a list of the cases in which preliminary inspections were carried out during the year, and the results and cost of each inspection; a list of the cases in which investigations were proceeding at the end of the year, and the amount expended during the year on such investigations; the total amount borne by the Government and chargeable to county councils respectively, in respect of schemes which were rejected after investigation; a list of the cases in which detailed schemes and estimates were prepared, or published, the estimated cost and a synopsis of each scheme; a list of the public inquiries held in connection with such schemes, and the results thereof; a list of the schemes submitted for sanction to the Minister ton Finance, and the result of each submission; a list of schemes upon which work commenced in the year 1927-28; the estimated total cost of these schemes, and the total amount expended upon them to the 31st March last; the number of schemes begun in previous years, but completed during the year 1927-28; the total estimated cost of such schemes; the total actual cost of such schemes; and the total amount expended upon such schemes for the year ending 31st March, 1928; and (4) the total amount due to the Board to the 31st March, 1928, in respect of loans made under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1925; the total amount which became due in respect of such loans during the year ending 31st March, 1928; the actual amount collected or recovered by the Board in respect of all advances made by them under the Act, and the actual amount collected by the Board in respect of moneys which became due during the year ending 31st March, 1928.
WRITTEN ANSWERS. - DRAINAGE MAINTENANCE ACT.
Statements are attached giving information as regards the period between the passing of the Drainage Maintenance Act, 1924, and the 31st March, 1928—in respect of parts (1) and (2) of the question. As regards part (4) no advances have yet been made under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1925. As regards part (3) I am prepared to make a return giving as far as possible the information sought but this will take a considerable time to prepare. I will confer with the Deputy as to its form.
