Vol. 24 No. 7

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - HOUSING GRANTS TO LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether it is intended to increase grants made to persons and local authorities erecting houses under the Housing Acts, and to extend the period during which grants for this purpose may be made; and, if so, whether he can state when proposals for legislation to give effect to these matters will be introduced.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether it is intended to introduce proposals for legislation to continue the operation of the Housing (Building Facilities) Act, 1924.

The nature and extent of future housing legislation will depend on the outcome of the Housing Conference at present sitting.

Is the Minister aware that very many people in the Free State have already started building, and that in some cases the houses are nearly completed, these people being of the opinion that grants were available? Is he aware that in some cases Public Utility Societies have entered into contracts for the building of a number of houses believing they would get these grants, and that now they cannot get them, as the money is exhausted? Is he prepared to take steps to see that grants will be provided for houses in course of construction?

We will consider any such cases on their merits.
