Vol. 26 No. 1

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - LETTER DELIVERIES IN RURAL AREAS.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware that the existing arrangements regarding the delivery of letters in Clonaslee and Rosenallis rural areas are inadequate; and whether, in view of the inconvenience caused thereby, he will see that letters are delivered in these areas four times weekly.

†Mr. Brennan's evidence. P.A.C. Report, 1925. Page 66, Question 501, et seq.

Owing to the loss to revenue sustained on the postal service in the Clonaslee-Rosenallis district it was necessary in 1923 and 1924, as part of a general restriction of unremunerative service in An Saorstát, to reduce the frequency of delivery. The district was not treated exceptionally. I regret that the expense which would be entailed by an increase in the frequency of service to four days a week would not be justified. I am inquiring whether it will be practicable to afford a delivery on three days a week on certain rural posts in the district which at present have a delivery on two days a week only, and I will let the Deputy know the result in due course.

Will the Parlimentary Secretary say what would be the additional cost of the increased service if Deputy Gorry's request was complied with?

That is a separate question.

I do not think so.

asked the Minister for Post and Telegraphs whether he is aware of the inconvenience caused to the people of the Clogagh (Timoleague) district of West Cork by the absence of a daily delivery of mails; and whether he will take steps to have this grievance remedied as soon as possible.

I find that the townland of Clogagh (Timoleague), with the exception of four houses which are situated in an out of the way part, already enjoys a daily delivery of correspondence. I regret that the additional expense which would be incurred by extending the existing frequency from three to six days a week to the four houses in question would not be warranted.
